If you pay a traffic ticket online, but its still showing that I havent paid it. How long does it take?

I just paid a traffic ticket a couple of days ago. And now when i look at it again it still says that i have not paid it. How long does it take for the traffic ticket to clear if you pay it online.

Contact the court in question for the answer.

  2. Typically the online payment services usually take up to 72 hours to reflect paid fines/fees etc. Even though you made payment online, everything is still processed by humans, and being that they are employees of your local government, they do not work on weekends or past 4:30 or 5:00. If you made payment after the close of business on a Friday, you may not see an updated status until possibly Tuesday or Wednesday of the following week. One jurisdiction that I have had involvement with only updated their online fine payments once a week so it typically took 7 to 10 business days for someone to see an updated payment status.

To be sure, call either the clerk of courts in the jurisdiction in which your citation was issued, or the number that should be written on the back of the ticket, to find out for sure if the payment was made.

Another way to check, would be to call your bank or look at your bank statement or credit card statement online to make sure the transaction was debited to your account. If your online statement shows that the transaction went though, then I would rest easy that you are in the clear.

  3. If it does not clear the system by the end of the business day on the day you paid it I would contact the clerk of the court of the county where the fine was assessed. Chances are that your payment method was declined for some reason.

Oh, and as a side note: This will not be a defense in court. You can not say "Well I paid it, but I guess it did not go through" unless you have a receipt in hand you will be considered late on your payment and open to additional fines or jail time.

Always print out a confirmation when paying online.
